Janet Hartford - 76, Truro, died suddenly from a tragic accident on Thursday, July 1, 2010. Born July 19, 1933, in Kansas City, she was a daughter of the late Willis and Virginia Hartford.

Janet earned a B.A in English at the University of Massachusetts where she met and married David Baker. She had four sons and taught elementary school in New Hampshire. Interested in farming, the family moved to Pictou County, Nova Scotia, in 1974. There they raised their family. Moving to Ontario in 1983, Janet obtained her Masters degree in Theology at St. Paul University. Jan loved to travel and lived in Montana, finally choosing to settle in Truro in 2000. Janet was a wonderful person who cared passionately about the earth and all of creation. She took time to smell the flowers and to appreciate the beauty around her. She was delighted by the splendour of nature and as a woman of faith she felt strongly about being a steward of the planet and all of its' inhabitants. She loved to give and over her lifetime spent many hours donating her time and energy to many organizations and groups. She was a member and friend of the Living Earth Council, Saint Andrew's United Church. Janet was an avid reader and loved to learn. As a writer and theologian she often contributed her work to magazines and newspapers.

Janet dearly loved her family. She will be sadly missed by her sons, Jeff (Gloria) Baker, Truro; Joel (Megan) Baker, Vancouver, BC; Randy (Rhonda) Baker, Medford, MA; Tom (Heidi) Baker, Vancouver, BC; her grandchildren, Ben, Max & Sarah, Nina, and Sidney. Another grandchild is expected in October. Janet is also survived by her sister, Sherry (John) Gould, Birmingham, Alabama; brother, Bruce Hartford, Missoula, Montana.

The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Saint Andrew's United Church, 55 King Street, Truro, where a memorial service to honour and celebrate Janet's life will also be held 3 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2010, Reverend Jay Ettinger officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. www.cwrc.net Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting the “Guest Book” at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
