MacDonald, Frederick John: 1927 - 2015; It is with great
sadness we announce the passing on Monday, September 7, 2015, at the
Colchester East Hants Health Centre of Frederick John
"Fred" MacDonald, of Upper Onslow NS. Born in
Dundee, Scotland, he was the son of the late Robert Frederick and
Francis Young (Foggie) MacDonald. He attended school in Dundee and
Cuper Fife, Scotland. He then joined the British Army in 1944 and
served in the 6th Airborn Division and was
stationed in Palestine. In 1948 he moved to Canada and made Truro his
home. He was employed with CN Railways from 1953-1986. Fred had a
great love for people and adventure. He received his private
pilot’s license in 1974 and was a member of the Debert
Flying Club. He loved to golf and was once a member of the Mountain
Golf Course. His late wife, Alice, taught him how to dance and this
turned into his greatest passion. He was a former President of the
Tuesday night seniors dance at the Truro Legion. There he continued to
glide around the dance floor until recently. Fred enjoyed bowling and
belonged to 2 leagues. He was an avid reader and talented craftsman
starting with building his own house. He was an adherent of the First
Baptist Church, Truro. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Barry)
Langille, Riverview NB; step-son, Eugene Whidden, Bible Hill; two
grandsons, Chris (Nadia) Langille, Riverview NB, and Ryan (Melissa)
Langille, Slaisbury NB; three step-grandchildren, Susan (George)
Dickie, Old Barns, Dale (Shelly) Whidden, Old Barns, and Sonya (Tom)
Shanahan, Bowmanville, ON; three great-grandchildren, six
step-great-grandchildren, and five step-great-great-grandchildren;
many nieces and nephews, and special friend Elsie Gamble. He was
predeceased by his parents; his wife, of 57 years, Alice (MacKenzie)
(Whidden) MacDonald; three sisters, Muriel Tucker, Elsie Tucker,
Francis; step-daughter, Maxine Horne; three step-grandchildren, David
and Bradley Horne, and Wade Whidden. He was a wonderful father and
grandfather and we will miss this special man. Visitation will be held
7-9 pm Thursday, September 10, and funeral service 2 pm Friday,
September 11, all in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young
Street Truro, Rev. Paul D. Worden officiating, with a reception to
follow in the funeral home. Interment will then be held in the
Crossroads Cemetery in Valley. Family flowers only. Donations in
Fred’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society,
First Baptist Church Truro, or to the SPCA would be appreciated.
