Brian Gordon Phelan - 82, Brookside, Colchester
County, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving
family, after a brief and aggressive illness, on Saturday, October 3,
2015. Born January 5, 1933, in North Sydney, Cape Breton, he was a son
of the late John and Annie (Martin) Phelan.
Brian was the consummate business professional who started
and successfully operated many businesses throughout Nova Scotia,
including The Orchard Queen Motel and Campgrounds in Middleton, Banner
Real Estate in Middleton, Brine Realty in New Glasgow and Truro,
Zodiac Video in Truro and Valley Meadows Ltd. in Truro. His passion
was real estate appraisal and development. He was a 50 year Mason in
service to The Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, an active and valuable
member of Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers and a member of Nova Scotia
Fiddlers Association. Brian served on many boards and committees such
as Northern NS Real Estate Association and Community Credit
Union.
A devoted and loving husband of 59 years, he is survived by
his loving wife, Phyllis "Queen Bee". A dedicated and loving
father, he is survived by children, Patrick, Truro; Brian (Cathy),
Beaver Bank; Ann (Eric) Stewart, Lower Sackville; Mark (Deanna),
Truro; grandchildren, Carl (Jen) Phelan, Christina Rankin, Megan
Phelan, Christopher (Lisa) Phelan, Ben Stewart, Jonathan Phelan; step
grandchildren, Shelley Ruggles, Trish Ruggles, Alex Stewart; several
great grandchildren; sisters, Violet ‘Vi’ Thorne,
Vivian Gates, Halifax; Ann (Lou) Bruckmoser, Wisconsin; brother,
George (Barb) Phelan, New Minas. Along with his parents, he was
predeceased by his brother, Major John "Jack" Phelan
(Retired). Special thanks to personal care giver, Susan Scott, and the
Palliative Care Team of Colchester East Hants Health
Centre.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Brian’s
family will receive friends from 2-4, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, October 7,
2015, and funeral service 2 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2015, Reverend
Clair MacLeod officiating. Reception will follow. Private family
interment in Crossroads Cemetery, Valley. In lieu of flowers,
donations in Brian’s memory to VON, Palliative Care Unit
(CEHHC), Canadian Red Cross or The Salvation Army are welcomed.
