Lewis, Charles Russell,

The peaceful passing of Charles Russell Lewis occurred at his home in Bass River on Sunday evening, January 10, 2016, surrounded by love. Born in Lunenburg on April 25, 1936, he was the son of Penrose Fitzgerald (Gerald) Lewis and Flora Elizabeth Pike. Charles began working at HMC Dockyard, Halifax, in 1956. After thirty-eight years of service, he retired from The Planning Department. In 1996, he retired to Bass River where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, clamming and time spent with family and friends. He was honored by the Canadian Red Cross for his many blood donations. For fifteen years,  Charles was a member of West Colchester Medical Society, serving as President for the past ten years. Charles is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Judy (Gilbert) Lewis, his son, Gilbert and wife Sheila Droesbeck-Lewis, Dartmouth, daughter Joanne (Darrin) Fletcher, Economy and twin granddaughters Jenna and Hannah Lewis. Also surviving are sisters Elizabeth Miller and Jean McCarvill, both of Lunenburg, and brother William (Bill) Lewis of Truro. He was a beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Charles was predeceased by siblings Borden, John, Mildred Weatherby, Vantine Annis, Jerry and George. Charles had an unassuming nature and was a confidant and good friend to people of all ages. He was quietly perceptive, thoughtful, generous and playfully argumentative with people he enjoyed. His strength and innovation gave him the ability to tackle anything that he set his mind to, while doing it on his own terms. He was often underestimated and liked it that way. He will be greatly missed. We would like to thank his family physician Dr. Karen Ewing, Dr. Don Rowe, the staff of West Colchester Community Health Centre, the VON team and family and friends for their support and assistance. Charles’ family will receive friends from 6 ~ 8 p.m., Thursday, January 14, in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 15, in the Riverside United Church, 5577 Highway 2, Bass River,  Reverend John Parsons officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Reception will follow in MacFarlane Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles’ memory to Riverside United Church, Truro Branch of the VON or a charity of choice are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Charles’ obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
