Howard Ellsworth "Al"
Atkinson – 81, North
River, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at East
Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Truro Heights, he was a son of the
late Howard and Mary (Weatherby) Atkinson.
Al served for five years with Royal Canadian Navy and was an
electrical mechanic most of his life. An avid horseman, he was Past
Honourary President of Truro Horseman’s Club.
Al is survived by his sons, Norman (Shelley), Brookside;
Kenneth (Kim), Bible Hill; daughters, Heather (Stevie), Pleasant
Valley; Lorraine (Rob) Hare, Nuttby Mountain; grandchildren, Scott,
Justin, Thornton; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews;
sisters, Pearl Dixon, Montreal, Quebec; Carlene (Roger) Delmastro,
Truro Heights; Hope (Doug) McCabe, Truro; Gail (Allan) Tarr, East
Mountain; brother, Colin (Kaye) Atkinson, Truro Heights;
sisters-in-law, Mary Atkinson, Lorraine Atkinson, Truro Heights. Along
with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen Booth
(Stables); one sister in infancy; brothers, Leith (June), Lavaughan,
Lester, Kelsey; brother-in-law, Kenneth Dixon.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Donald Rowe, Reverend
Donna Lawrence, and the staff of Colchester East Hants Health Centre
and East Cumberland Lodge for your care, love and support of our
father and family.
All are welcome to attend a graveside interment service that
will be held 1 p.m., Monday, June 6, 2016, at Crossroads Cemetery, 110
Salmon River Road, Valley, Reverend Donna Lawrence officiating.
Reception will follow in St. David’s United Church Hall,
corner of Pictou Road and St. David’s Avenue, Bible Hill. If
so desired, donations in Al’s memory to Alzheimer Society of
Nova Scotia are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to
Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
