James Merton "Jimmie" Williams –
89, Barrie, Ontario, formerly of Bass River, passed away on Friday,
April 1, 2016, at Grove Park Home, Barrie, Ontario. Born in Bass
River, he was the fourth son of the late Walter and Henrietta (Carde)
Williams.
Jimmie served in the Canadian Army during the Second World
War, where he met and later married Gladys Rideout. They were happily
married for 56 years before she died in 2003. He was a very active
member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years and obtained 40 years of
sobriety before his death. Jimmie spent most of his life working as a
self-employed carpenter. Everyone knew him as a "Jack of all
Trades", that could always be relied on to fix or build whatever
you needed. He was a very kind, generous man that always left people
with a smile.
Jimmie is survived by his loving daughter, Selena (Kevin)
Croxall, and adoring grandson, Alex, Barrie, Ontario; brothers, Alfred
(Jean), Dalhousie, New Brunswick; Stanley (Ollie), Amherst; sisters,
Elizabeth McInnis, New Minas; Patricia Cottenden, Amherst; Pauline
(John) May, Truro. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his
brothers, Roy (Audrey), Robert (Elta), David (Nellie), John, Paul
(Betty), Cecil (Etta); sister, Ruth (Rollie) Ettinger.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jimmie’s
family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016.
Funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Faith
Baptist Church, 38 Station Road, Great Village, Pastor Steve Adams
officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Private family
interment in Bass River Baptist Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so
desired, donations in Jimmie’s memory to Grove Park Home,
Barrie, Ontario, or The War Amps are welcomed. Private messages of
