Preston Oliver Hingley – 86, Chester Basin, formerly of Hilden, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Kemptown, he was a son of the late William and Susan (McCabe) Hingley.

Preston was a carpenter, having worked for Kenny Construction, Boyd & Garland and Nova Scotia Government Public Works Department. He enjoyed working with his hands and helping people, loved spending time at the cottage in Brule with family and friends, enjoyed music, being with his brothers in the woods, hunting and fishing. Preston and his wife, Carole, lived in Hilden for 27 years where he was one of the founders of Hilden Fire Department and was fire chief for several years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Truro Lodge # 43. Preston spent the last 15 years residing in Chester Basin with his partner, June Marengere.

Preston will forever be in the hearts of his children, Joy (Mike) Surette, Yarmouth; Beth (Doug) MacKenzie, Truro; Michael (Vicki), Brookfield; Mark (Bernadette), Truro; grandchildren, Dana Surette, Krista MacKenzie, Shawn MacKenzie, Matthew MacKenzie, Shannon MacKenzie, Roy Hingley, Mikayla Hingley; brothers, Earl (Ethel), Ernest (Sylvia), Flemming (Grace), Robert (Patricia), Laurie (Carol); sister, Maxine (Charles) Shearer; sister-in-law, Wilma Hingley; brother-in-law, Ron Read; several nieces and nephews. Preston will be terribly missed by June and her family: son, Curtis; grandchildren, Lisa, Brooke, Nathan; great grandson, Jeremy. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Carole (Bryson); one granddaughter in infancy; brothers, Parker, Russell, Ronald; sisters, Marjorie, Bertha, Annie, Norma, Muriel, Aileen.

There will be two celebrations of Preston’s life. The first will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016, in Chester United Baptist Church, 84 King Street, Chester, Reverend Dr. Dan Green officiating. Reception will follow. Following this, Preston’s family will receive friends at Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016, and memorial service 2 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2016, Reverend Dr. Dan Green officiating. Reception will follow. Interment at a later date in Hilden Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Preston’s memory to QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice are welcomed.
