James William "Jim"
Whalen – 87, Truro,
passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday,
May 21, 2016, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in
Newcastle, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late James and Mary
(O’Brien) Whalen.
Jim was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic
Church for 50 years. He was a founding member of Cobequid District
Fire Brigade where he served as firefighter and steward. An avid
sportsman, in his younger days he was an outstanding baseball player
with Newcastle Cardinals and in later years enjoyed bowling and
golfing and was a harness racing fan. He worked for Logan Brothers and
other companies before working at NSAC (Maintenance Department) where
he continued to work until just a couple of years ago.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Edith
"DeeDee" (Savoy); children, Chris (Andrea) Whalen, Moncton,
New Brunswick; David (Louise) Whalen, Saint John, New Brunswick; Liane
Whalen (David DeWolfe), Truro; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jonathan,
Jessica, Alex, Brandyn; great grandchildren, Anisya, Chance, Aidan,
Samantha, Dallas; brother, Terry (Hazel) Whalen, Newcastle, New
Brunswick; brother-in-law, Richard "Dick" Rafferty, Moncton,
New Brunswick; numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he
was predeceased by his sister, Agnes Rafferty; brothers, John
(Bernice) Whalen, Joseph "Joe" Whalen.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Cobequid District
Fire Brigade will conduct a Firefighter's Tribute Service at 5:30 p.m,
Wednesday, May 25, 2016, followed by visitation from 6-8 p.m.,
Wednesday, May 25, 2016, also at the funeral home. Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2016, at
Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro,
Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. Reception will follow in
Campbell Hall. Interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, 125 Robie
Street, Truro. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in
Jim’s memory to Cobequid District Fire Brigade are welcomed.
