Ruby Leona MacCallum – 98, Truro. It is
with heavy hearts that the family of Ruby MacCallum announce her
passing in the Palliative Care Unit of Colchester East Hants Health
Center, Truro, on Sunday, November 13, 2016. Ruby was born in East
Noel, Hants County, and was a daughter of Albert L. and Carrie
(Mosher) Hoyt.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband,
Archibald; brothers, Henry, Russell, Leonard, Melvin, Ralph, Milton;
sister, Pearl Dennis. She is survived by her sisters; Nina Coutts,
Surrey, British Columbia; Louise Fleming, Truro; Ruth Jones, Newark,
New York, U.S.A.; numerous nieces and nephews.
After attending Success Business School, Ruby began her
working career in 1939 in the accounting department of Frost and Wood,
where she worked for six years for the princely sum of $15 per week.
Subsequent employment was at the Veteran’s Land Act Office
and Lewis Ltd Factory. In 1957 she began her career with the Federal
government working at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police sub-division
office in Truro, where she stayed until her retirement in
1980.
Ruby was a very social person loving nothing more than
preparing a meal and having people over, either family or friends, for
a game of bridge. She loved organizing gatherings and outings,
especially family reunions. She was active in her church and worked on
various committees including Sunday school, United Church Women,
Property Committee and the Board of Stewards. Ruby was also a member
of the R.C.M.P. Veterans Association, with whom she enjoyed many
social functions. Over the years, Ruby enjoyed travelling and was, on
many occasions, able to travel to the Northwest Territories, United
States, Caribbean, Europe, Mediterranean and Africa, only stopping
when her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Ruby’s family would like to take this opportunity
to thank the many individuals and organizations that provided care and
support to her, especially during the last year of her life.
A special thanks to the staff of Parkland Truro, Victorian Order of
Nurses and special friend, Kathy Weatherby.
