Donald
Fredrick Muir, of Truro, passed away January 1, 2017. He was born in
New Glasgow, NS June 27, 1922 to Samuel and Margaret (Grant) Muir. He
moved to Windsor, NS in 1940 with his family. While in Windsor, Don
was active in community sports playing hockey, curling and golf. He
was a King's Scout and a Scout leader. In 1942 he joined the RCAF and
went to Ontario for pilot training. He had his wings pinned by Air
Marshal Billy Bishop. In the spring of 1943, Don was sent overseas and
served as a glider instructor and a fighter pilot flying Hurricanes in
England until 1945. Returning to Windsor after the war, he finished
his education at Acadia University. He worked in the family grocery
business until joining Pfizer Pharmaceutical as a sales representative
in 1963, relocating to Truro in 1969. Don was an active
member of the Truro community. He helped start the Debert Glider Club
in 1970 and the Truro Flying Club in 1972. He enjoyed many hours of
flying and was an active member of the Civil Air Search and Rescue
Association until 2016. He was a Gyro Club member for 65 years, and
was involved with Golden K, the St. John's Anglican Church, Curling
Club and Golf Club. Don always maintained a close connection to family
and friends in Windsor. Often visiting to attend dances, parties and
other social events, Don and June were always the first on the dance
floor.
Don, and
his bride June, enjoyed a long retirement. Don curled, played golf and
could often be seen zipping around town on his red Honda scooter. He
also enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family.
Don is
predeceased by his brother Grant (Julie).
He is
survived by his wife June (Bearne) of 60 years, his sister Dorothy
Cameron, sons Jim (Kate - grandchildren John, Eve, Stephen), Robert
and David (Margaret - grandchildren Olivia, Matthew, Dawson) and
family friend Tomeq.
Arrangements
have been entrusted to Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street,
Truro. Funeral service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church,
Truro on Friday, January 6th at 2 PM.
The Reverend Lori Ramsey will officiate with a reception to follow in
the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made it to the
