Loughead, Rowena Newell (Yuill), age 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Wynn Park Villa, Truro on Monday, February 27, 2017. She was the daughter of Fred Hughes Yuill and Harriet Newell (Black) Yuill. Along with her parents, Mom was predeceased by husband Frank Kent Loughead and brother Arthur "Bus" Yuill. She is survived by daughter Lynne (Dave) Holmes, Scottsdale, Arizona, and sons Eric (Kathy) Loughead, Lodi, California; Kent (Judy) Loughead, Old Barns,NS; Dave (Trish Pettis) Loughead, Old Barns, NS; Mike (Bonnie) Loughead, Pictou,NS; and Jim (Debbie) Loughead, Oyster Pond, NS. Survived also by grandchildren David Loughead, Halifax, NS;  Ryan (Ashley) Loughead, Grande Prairie, Alberta; Kevin (Holly) Loughead, Grande Prairie, Alberta; Jamie Loughead, Wolfville, NS; Shaun (Cassie) Holmes, Scottsdale, Arizona; Sheri (Carlton) Brown, San Luis Obispo, California; Morgan Pettis, Old Barns, NS; and great grandchildren Elaine, Grace, and Sarah Holmes; Carlton, Arriona, Lisiona, and Detriona Brown; Cam, Alec, and Brandon Loughead; and Auna Loughead Folks. In her time spent on the family farm or in her residences in California, Mom took such great pride in raising her 6 children. Although she spent time working at the bank or in the retail business in her younger days and was very involved in the Old Barns United Church as church organist and a founding member of the Progressive Club and UCW, Mom would beam if all you envisioned about her life was the love she had for children and how proud she was to be their mother. Even though Multiple Sclerosis invaded her body in the 1960's, it did nothing to take Mom away from her role as the matriarch of the family. Competitive is not a word you would use to describe Mom if you knew her casually, but if it involved a game of Bridge or Canasta or 45's, then you would be introduced to the gaming spirit of this beautiful lady. And yet, you would not be surprised if she felt better that you won the game instead of her "getting the circle". The family extends their sincere thanks to the care givers at Valley View Villa in Westville and Wynn Park Villa in Truro. In her almost 9 years at Wynn Park, "Ro" developed so many great friendships with the staff and residents. The gang on the East Wing were family in so many ways and we are grateful that you took such great care of her. Special thanks also to Stan Kaulback and his sisters Faye and Joan for adopting Mom into their family while she was at Wynn Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro, where Rowena’s family will receive friends from 6 ~ 9 pm Saturday, March 4, 2017. Funeral service will be held 2 pm Sunday, March 5, 2017, in the Old Barns United Church, Rev. Dan Gunn officiating, with a reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. Family flowers only. Donations in Rowena’s memory may be made to the Old Barns United Church, or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
