Olive Irene Ettinger – 92, Brookside,
Colchester County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving
family, on Thursday evening, March 2, 2017, at Colchester East Hants
Health Centre, Truro. Born in Onslow Mountain, she was a daughter of
the late Lisherman and Mary (Higgins) McCallum.
Olive was the oldest member of Cornerstone Assembly Church
and a member of Veterans, Widows and Widowers Association. In earlier
years, she enjoyed bowling, ceramics and gardening and had a life-long
passion for quilting. Her family will forever treasure the beautiful
quilts that she made for them with love. Mom also provided love and
support to her extended family throughout her years. Her faith and
devotion was a testimony to all who knew her.
Olive is survived by her children, Patricia (Cors) Verhage,
Vernon, British Columbia; Sharon (Melvin) Ferris, Mill Cove, New
Brunswick; Paulette (Blair) Cox, Lumby, British Columbia; Jeanette
(Gary) Leamont, Valley; Juanita (Elmo) MacIntosh, Scotch Settlement,
New Brunswick; Dean (Kathy) Ettinger, Onslow Mountain; son-in-law,
Helmut Hoppe (Laurie); 19 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 16
great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Along with her
parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard Harvey Ettinger;
daughter, Shelley Hoppe; great-great granddaughter, Makenna in
infancy; siblings, Russell, Charles, Kenneth, Arnold, Geordie, Earl,
Loleta, Elizabeth.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Cortney Smith, Dr. Daniel
Smith, Dr. Ryan Sommers, Dr. Jan Sommers and all the staff at
Palliative Care Unit for your compassionate care and to the VON for
ensuring that our Mother could stay in her own home as long as she
did.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Olive’s
family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Monday, March 6, 2017, and
funeral service 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2017, Reverend Oral Stewart
officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Crossroads
Cemetery, 110 Salmon River Road, Valley. If so desired, donations in
Olive’s memory to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Home
Care Support Workers or a charity of choice are welcomed. Private
