F. Lloyd Cavanagh –
93, Bible Hill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by
his loving family, on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Colchester East
Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late
George and Alice (O’Brien) Cavanagh.
Lloyd served his country during the Second World War as
Second Lieutenant radio operator in the Merchant Navy. Upon his return
to Truro, Lloyd worked at CKCL Radio as a program director and was
instrumental in founding the Saturday night jamboree, which became a
favourite among many listeners; along with enjoying his work at the
radio station, it was there where he met his future wife, Jean. They
eventually married and along with three young children at home, they
purchased land at 19 Main Street where they worked side by side for a
number of years building a successful family business,
Cavanagh’s Food Market.
Lloyd often reminisced that it was his greatest joy to work
with Jean every day and they both enjoyed the relationships that they
made with their many loyal customers. He was a strong supporter of the
community and its people; he gave his time as a village commissioner,
school trustee, working with the hospital foundation and as a member
of First Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a kind and loving
husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. Those who knew him well
will remember him for his sense of humour and quick
wit.
Lloyd is survived by his children, Alice Gibbons (Ken), Ben
Cavanagh, Connie Brooks (Brett), Shawn Cavanagh; nine grandchildren;
seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Along with his
parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean
(McCray); sisters, Evelyn (Murray) Shaw, Georgie (Larry) Hatfield,
Patricia (Lauder) Perrin.
Special thanks are extended to Reverend Paul Worden, Dr. Nina
Makkar, Truro EMTs, Palliative Care Team, Linda and Bill Cook and the
gang at Tim’s.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2017,
in First Baptist Church, 759 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend Paul
Worden officiating. Reception will follow in Memorial Hall. Private
family interment in Bible Hill Cemetery, Warren Drive, Bible Hill.
