Dr. John
Edgar Curtis - 80, London, Ontario, formerly of Truro and
Toronto, Ontario, passed away on Saturday, August 19,
2017, at Horizon Place, London, Ontario. Born in Truro, he
was the eldest son of the late Dr. Edgar and Ella (Ferrand) Curtis.
He graduated
from Dalhousie University in Medicine in 1963. In 1967 he was awarded
a Fellowship in Internal Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada. He continued post graduate
studies in Hematology and Oncology at the MD Anderson Hospital in
Houston, Texas. He returned to Toronto and took a position at Princess
Margaret Hospital where he practiced Oncology until 1998
specializing in Bone Marrow Transplants. He moved to Windsor, Ontario
to participate in the establishment of Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.
He subsequently moved to University Hospital, London, Ontario
and accepted a position in the Oncology Service at University of
Western Ontario. He retired from Oncology Practice but remained active
in public service through work with London Salvation Army at the
Centre of Hope, and as a member of Alzheimer Society of London and
Middlesex.
In 1963 he
married Dorothy Bernice Fourier who
predeceased him in 1997. They raised three sons together. He was
predeceased in 1992 by their first son, Peter Edgar Curtis in
an untimely and tragic accident. He is survived by his sons, John
Andrew Curtis (Lisa), New York City; Philip Edgar Curtis
(Irena), Florida; brothers, David Ferrand Curtis (Donna)
and Dr. Gary Marshall Curtis (Donna),
Truro; grandchildren, Ella and Peter Curtis, New York; an
extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.John is remembered
fondly by many former patients, colleagues, family and
friends.
Arrangements
have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55
Young Street, Truro, where John’s family will receive
friends from 1-1:45 p.m., Friday, August 25, 2017, followed by the
funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment in Old Barns Cemetery, across from
2432 Highway 236, Beaver Brook. If so desired, donations in
John’s memory to a charity of choice are welcomed. Private
