Donald Owen Simpson - 83, Truro. It is with the greatest of sadness that the family of Donald Owen Simpson announce his passing on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Don was born in Sydney to the late Harold H. and A. Hazel (Rayner) Simpson and grew up on their farm with his sister, Anita and brother, Reagh. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In 1958, his job saw him moving to Corner Brook, Newfoundland where he met the great love of his life, Elva. After a whirlwind courtship, they married in 1959 and had three children: Kathy Simpson-Giles, Great Village; Sean, Truro; Scott (Sarah), Glen Williams, Ontario. One of his truly greatest joys was the birth of his grandchildren and he cherished every moment he had with them. His face would light up like a child on Christmas morning when he heard them call out "Where’s Poppy?" He will be missed by Courtney Giles (Ken Silver), Joshua (Nicole) Giles, Caitlin Giles (David Meredith), all of Nova Scotia; Veronica and Charlotte Simpson, Ontario. His pride in and love for you were immeasurable. If his greatest joys were his grandchildren, his great grandchildren put him over the moon. He loved Christine, Michael, Lucas and Jadyn whole heartedly, and he had another generation who would sit on his lap contentedly while he read to them.

Don was always involved in service organizations and groups whose focus was on helping others. He lived the commandment that says we should love one another. He did his part volunteering for Out of the Cold program, sitting on committees to rehome refugees, Christmas Gift Index and Meals on Wheels just to name a few. If there was a need, he would be there to address it.

The family would like to thank Truro Fire Service and EHS paramedics for their response and the nurses of Emergency Department and IMCU. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hali Bauld and Dr. Sarbjit Singh for their excellent care and compassion provided in his last days.

You can join us in a celebration of his life at 2 p.m., Friday, August 17, 2018, at First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Reception will follow in Memorial Hall. In lieu of flowers, performing an act of kindness in his memory or a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Don’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
