Erma Joyce Starratt
Erma Joyce Starratt – 98, Bass River, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Bass River, she was a daughter of the late James and Jennie (MacLaughlin) Starratt.
Joyce graduated from Success Business College, Truro, and was a proof reader for a local newspaper, worked as a switchboard operator at the Telephone Office in Truro and later in Bass River, taught school in Colchester, Pictou and Hants Counties and worked for many years at Dominion Chair Company Limited General Store in Bass River.
Joyce had many interests, especially her gardens, numerous pets (both wild and domestic), beautiful hand stitched quilts and was an active and talented singer and soloist in church and community choirs; she last performed a solo at Victoria Hall, Bass River, in July. She also enjoyed travel to many countries and especially her long walks in the woods around her beloved home on Edgewood Road. She was a lifelong member of Riverside United Church, Bass River, where she sang in the choir and served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher and was also a member of Rebekah Lodge.
Joyce is survived by her sisters, Clara Galway (Roy), Listowel, Ontario; Barbara MacDonald Hood, Truro; nieces and nephews, Jim (Meg), Margaret (Roddy), Peter (Janice), Margaret, Robert (Paulette), Brian (Linda), Andrew (Doug), Elizabeth (Mark); many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn McLellan.
The family would like to thank the VON and Home Care Team who were very special to Joyce and allowed her to remain in her own home as she wished, up to a few weeks before her death, Dr. Karen Ewing, Reverend Florence Antle-Brison and the staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Riverside United Church, 5577 Highway 2, Bass River, Reverend Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Reception will follow at Bass River Fire Hall, 5554 Highway 2, Bass River. Spring interment in Riverside United Church Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Joyce’s memory to Riverside United Church or Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre are welcomed.
