Kirk, Anna –Dec. 5, 1931 – Dec.
2, 2019. It is with great sadness that the family of Anna
Kirk of Truro announce the passing of our dear mother in her
88th year on December 2, 2019 in the Halifax
Infirmary, QEII. She was the last surviving member of her
family.
Anna was the youngest child born to Thomas Hull,
(Belfast, Ireland) and Annie (Neilson) Hull (Ardrossan,
Scotland). Her family immigrated to Canada in 1928 and
worked a farm in Lanesville, Colchester Co, NS. Anna was the
only child born in Canada.
At a young age, Anna married Harold Atkinson and
together they had four children: Judy, Robert, Gary and Nancy. After
the family moved from Stewiacke to Truro, Anna worked at Zellers,
while raising her family. She was a hardworking, dedicated employee.
Being both a homemaker and working outside the home leaves one with
very little spare time, all of which she devoted to the well-being of
the family. Anna instilled in her children the importance of honesty,
caring for others and exemplary work ethics. Anna left Zellers to work
for Lloyd Smith, managing the "Record Bar". Here, she met
many people who became lifelong friends. Thirty years later, she would
meet former customers and recall their choice of musical artists and
records: a testament to her appreciation of the people she served.
When this store closed, she went to work at Zellers, Fundy Trail Mall.
Her warm, gentle personality endeared her to many more shoppers. In
1972, Anna married Willis Kirk and welcomed his children Linda, George
and David, into her life.
Anna’s passions in life included family
activities, shopping and travelling. She felt fortunate to
have travelled abroad. Venice held a special place in her heart, along
with Jerusalem, Hawaii and many other locations. Anna admired and
enjoyed fancy dishes. She always set a beautiful table whether for
herself or a crowd. She had a very large collection of cups
and saucers, and always had room for one more. The Royal Family was
well represented in her home by photos, magazines, ornaments and
various unique items. Although she felt she had no specific talents,
we knew differently. Anna has left behind and given away many lovely
pieces of ceramics, pictures of paper toleing and beautiful pieces of
embroidery. She did have many talents and attributes, most of all a
remarkable personality. She lived her life with a grace and elegance
that touched all those who knew her. We will cherish her for the rest
of our lives, as we did when she was with us. Mum was a
beautiful, gentle, lady who was the centre of our
world.
Anna is survived by daughters, Judy (Wilfred)
Smith, East Stewiacke; Nancy Atkinson (Bill), Truro; step-daughter,
Linda Wilson (Norman), Ottawa; sons, Robert Atkinson (Linda) Hardwood
Lands; Gary Atkinson (Gayla) Saint John, NB; step-sons, George Kirk
(Joan) Truro; David Kirk (Marjorie) Ottawa; 14 grandchildren, 14 great
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her
parents; first husband, Harold Atkinson; second husband, Willis Kirk;
siblings, Catherine (Avard) Jeffers; William (Hazel) Hull; James
(Beulah) Hull; Tom (Ellen) Hull; Catherine in infancy; son-in-law,
Wilfred Smith.
We will miss the sound of her voice and the touch
of her hand. We will live each day honouring her because she instilled
within us the meaning of what family is all about.
