Lucy Millicent Freake – 100, Halifax. It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother on Sunday, April 26, 2020, at Drummond Hall, Parkland Estates, Clayton Park, Halifax. Born in the little community of Barr’d Island, on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, she was the third daughter of the late William and Phoebe (Keats) Brett.

In 1947, Lucy graduated from St. John’s General Hospital with her RN and then worked as an outpost nurse in many coastal communities in Newfoundland. In 1949, she married her childhood sweetheart, Reverend Charles E. Freake, who was from the neighbouring community of Joe Batts Arm. Being  married to a United church minister meant traveling and living in many communities across Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Bermuda. Lucy loved to cook, knit, crochet and garden and it was always special to receive socks, mittens or scarves made by Lucy. She was a devoted wife, mother, nurse and friend and she will be remembered by all who knew her for generosity, kindness, sense of humour and smile. Her 100th birthday celebration in October 2019 will not soon be forgotten!

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Charles; son, Paul.

Lucy is survived by her brother, Charlie (Norma) Brett, Newfoundland; daughters, Linda (Roland) White, Carolyn (Allan) McDiarmid; grandchildren, Brett Crozsman, Beth (Phil) Burchinshaw, Ian (Ella) McDiarmid, Lucy McDiarmid, Julia (Jeff) Grandy, Rachelle (Lee) Vessey, Colleen Freake; great grandchildren, Cole and Mackenzie Crozsman, Sophia Burchinshaw, Isla, Angus and Stevie Marie McDiarmid, Violet Grandy, Teddy and Stella Vessey; daughter-in-law, Pat Connally; sisters-in-law, Joan Freake, Maxine Freake; many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to all the nurses who looked after Lucy in Bradford Hall and Drummond Hall at Parkland Estates.

A celebration of Lucy's life will be held Saturday, October 3, 2020, at Knox United Church, 567 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, Reverend Sandra Cox officiating.(Lucy's celebration will be by invitation only due to COVID-19 restrictions; thank you for understanding.)
