Dorothy Florence Hirtle – 84, Bible Hill. It is with heavy hearts we, the family of Dorothy Hirtle, announce her peaceful passing on Thursday evening, May 7, 2020, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mom was a registered nurse, graduating from the Nova Scotia Hospital class of 1958. She excelled in her chosen career and was known to be caring and compassionate. In her retirement years, mom and dad spent countless days on the road traveling in their fifth wheel trailer and making friends at every stop. She also loved to cook and bake and would regularly entertain family and friends with amazing home-cooked meals, BBQs, lobster boils or simple snacks around the pool. This was a labor of love for mom; she would do almost everything single-handed and we knew better than to get in her way in the kitchen.

Mom is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James William "Billy" Hirtle, Bible Hill; her four grateful children: daughters, Kelly (Wayne) Lynds, Bible Hill; Lana Hirtle (Douglas Churchill), Halifax; Kenda (Greg) MacCallum, Valley; son, Peter (Tanya) Hirtle, North River; her pride and joy, her grandchildren: Andrew Lynds, Salmon River; Benjamin Lynds, Bible Hill; Matthew (Dayna) MacCallum, Bedford; Connor MacCallum, Valley; Emma Churchill, Halifax; Rachel Hirtle, Lethbridge, Alberta; Cameron Hirtle, North River; step-grandson, Matthew Churchill, Summerside, Prince Edward Island; sister, Shirley Morin, Montreal, Quebec; brothers, Darrell (Gloria) Murdock, North River; Robert (Carol) Murdock, Bible Hill. She was predeceased by her mother, Bella Murdock (Marshall); siblings, Helen Murdock, Laurie Murdock, James (Marion) Murdock, Marion (Harry) MacNutt.

We would like to thank Dr. Don Rowe, Mom’s friend and family doctor, Lisa Weatherbee and the Palliative Care Team and VON for their care, love and support that allowed us to keep our Mom at home.

Graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, August 29, 2020, in Earltown Village Cemetery. Due to current Covid-19 and Public Health requirements, a maximum of 250 people will be permitted to attend and masks are required. Please bring your own chair, practice physical distancing and register with one of the funeral directors upon arrival.

If so desired, donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia are welcomed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Dorothy’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
