Helen Kathleen Caldwell

Helen Kathleen Caldwell – 94, Valley, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with her children by her side. Born in Stanley, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Spencer and Edna (Anthony) Campbell.

In her younger years, before her marriage, Helen took a position at the post office in Mosherville, Hants County. This was during the Second World War when the flying school was active at Stanley Airport; a large amount of mail from Europe was sorted through this tiny post office. Helen was then recruited to teach school in Greenfield, Hants County. She attended Provincial Normal College in Truro, after which she taught school in a number of communities in Hants County.

Helen was a member of Valley-Greenfield United Church. She enjoyed cooking, and to say she was a good cook was an understatement; family always looked forward to her holiday and special dinners. She kept her mind sharp with the daily crossword puzzles and weekly Lexicon and also enjoyed watching baseball, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Cathy (Carl) Longard, Valley; son, David (Rita) Caldwell, Cole Harbour; grandchildren, Jennifer Caldwell, Dartmouth; John (Meggie) Caldwell, Waverley; great grandchildren, Jack and Emily Caldwell; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Caldwell, Truro; several step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Egbert "Bert" (2017); siblings, Glen (Myrtle) Campbell, Aileen Campbell, Olive (Albert) Sparks; sisters-in-law, Blanche (Earle) Tanner, Mary (Ross) Boylan; brother-in-law, Kenneth Caldwell.

Family graveside service will be held at a later date at Crossroads Cemetery, 110 Salmon River Road, Valley. If so desired, donations in Helen’s memory to Valley-Greenfield United Church, 110 Salmon River Road, Valley, NS B6L 2S5 or charity of choice are welcomed.
