Robert Joseph "Bob" Evans
Sr. – 92, Truro, passed away Friday evening, July 3, 2020,
in Truro.
Bob was born in Sydney (Whitney Pier) to the late Lemuel and Blanche
Evans. A
proud
Cape Bretoner,
he was the sixth of eleven children in
his much loved
family.
In his early
years, Bob enjoyed boxing, rugby and playing darts. He began his
working life at Sydney Steel Mill and then went on to have a 40 year
career with
Maritime
Tel & Tel,
retiring in 1990. He was a great foreman, treating everyone with
respect, never asking anyone to do something he wouldn’t do
himself.
It was in Sydney that Bob met his
bride to be, Teresa (Gosse) on a blind date when she was visiting her
sister. After trips to visit each other and a long distance romance,
they married in
St. Ephrem’s
Roman Catholic
Church, Brooklyn,
New York in 1963. They returned to Sydney to start their married life
eventually moving to Truro in 1969. Together
they had
three children, four
grandchildren,
one great grandchild and 57 years of
marriage.
Bob loved to chat, play cards and
share a good joke. He was a generous soul and never asked for much.
His most important role was a dad and a "Poppy" to his
beloved grandchildren. He loved us unconditionally, was always
supportive, never held a grudge, never gave up the chance to be in a
picture and was always ready to share a tool or lend a hand. He would
instantly drop whatever he was doing to help us out and we will miss
him deeply.
Bob was a quiet, devout
Catholic and a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church,
Truro. Bob served on and was a member of many organizations over the
years including Telephone Pioneers of America, Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 26 Truro, Truro Golf Club and Kinsmen Club. He spent
many, many years
working on the Poppy Campaign each November and was a constant
presence at Remembrance Day services as well as Legion Tribute
services.
Bob is survived by his
wife,
Teresa; son,
Robert (Mary) and granddaughter, Macy Aileen,
Truro; son,
Brian (Kelly) and grandsons, Jacob and Ryan (Ashley) Webber and great
grandson, Ryker, Halifax; daughter, Karen (Derrick) Carroll and
granddaughter, Makayla, Truro. Also surviving is his brother, Paul
(Ann) Evans, Sydney; many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents,
Bob was predeceased by his sisters, Aileen, Thelma, Joan Marie;
brothers, Lemuel, James, Leo, Bruce, Alfred, Ralph.
