Wilbert Earle "Will" Sutherland –
Truro. It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden
passing of Will (Wilbert Earle) Sutherland on Sunday, April 22, 2012
in The Villages, Florida, USA at the age of 66.
Will was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, where he attended
elementary school before moving to Sydney, Nova Scotia, where he
graduated from Sydney Academy High School. Continuing his education at
Dalhousie University, Will graduated with his B. Com. and achieved his
Chartered Accountant designation in 1969. He began his career with the
accounting firm Peat, Marwick, Mitchell before accepting a position as
the CFO for the House of Hay Ltd. in Truro, Nova
Scotia.
After working a fulfilling career, Will took early retirement
and enjoyed the freedom it gave him. Hockey and golf were two of his
favorite pastimes. With over a 60-year association with hockey, he
played at a varsity level for Sydney Academy and the Dalhousie Tigers,
and "retired" with the Truro Bearcat Old-Timers. He
was very active in many volunteer roles that included over 20 years of
coaching minor hockey, a director of Truro Junior A Bearcats, and
recently the Canada Winter Games at Ski Wentworth. He was a member of
the Truro Golf Club for many years and enjoyed daily games with his
buddies. Will’s real passion was his family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Earle David Sutherland and
Lois Ann (nee Ingram, Sutherland) Halliday and baby sister, Erdine. He
is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Jody (Josephine Long);
beloved sons, Jeff, wife Julie (Hinkley), granddaughters Emma,
Charlotte and Heather; and Greg, wife Kathy (MacIsaac), grandson
Emmett and grand-dog Boo. Also survived by his sister, Katherine
Schaefer (Paul); brother, Rev. David (Irma); sister-in-law, Marge
Fisher (Dirk Kamink); brother-in-law, Perce Long (Dorothy);
step-brother, Fraser Halliday (Ethel); as well as eleven nieces and
nephews and nine grand-nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Will’s life will be held 11 a.m.,
Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at St. James Presbyterian Church, 725 Prince
Street, Truro, Reverend Dr. David Sutherland and Reverend Sandy
Sutherland officiating. Reception will follow in the church basement.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Nova Scotia, "Ignite the Spirit" Campaign (In
support of the Central NS Civic Centre) or a charity of choice.
