Herman Alfred
Gamble – 88, Bass
River, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Friday evening, April
19, 2013, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, as a result of
complications from suffering a stroke. Born February 23, 1925, in
Castlereagh, Colchester County, he was a son of the late Cameron and
Mary (Newton) Gamble.
In 1940 at the age of 18, Herman joined the Army and served
with North Nova Highlanders. He was transferred to RCEME where he
spent the remainder of his 20 year career. His rank at retirement was
Sergeant. He also served time with the Peace Corp. in Egypt. After he
retired from the Army, he became a plumber which he did until his
retirement. He also had a mechanics course and body and fender. In
1996, he moved back to Nova Scotia where he remained until his death.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and was a member of
Corinthian Lodge 63, AF&AM, Great Village and Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch 45, Parrsboro. He enjoyed baking bread, gardening and
working on antique cars.
Herman is survived by his partner, Vina Jackson; sister,
Madeline Gamble, Truro; daughters, Bonnie (Barry) Hunter, Mississauga,
Ontario; Madeline (Kevin) Primeau, Whitby, Ontario; son, Cameron
(Rita) Gamble, Bradford, Ontario; grandchildren, Matt Martin, Cindy
Kennedy, Jeffery Parsons, Stacey Godin, Ontario; many nieces and
nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by sister,
Charlotte MacFarlane; brothers, Lawson, Bernard, Norman,
Malcolm.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Karen Ewing, staff of
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Bass River Pharmacy, terrific
girls at VON, staff of Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, his
driver Harvey for the many trips to Halifax and to all who helped him
in any way, especially Randy.
Herman’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m.,
Monday, April 22, 2013, at Riverside United Church, 5577 Highway 2,
Bass River. Prior to visitation, Corinthian Lodge 63, AF&AM,
will conduct a Masonic Lodge Tribute Service at 6 p.m. Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch 45, Parrsboro, will conduct a Legion Tribute Service
1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013, followed by the funeral service at
2 p.m., also at Riverside United Church, Reverend Florence
Antle-Brison officiating. Interment in Riverside United Church
Cemetery. Reception to follow in the church basement. Family flowers
only. If so desired, donations in Herman’s memory to Bass
River Medical Centre, Riverside United Church or Veterans Memorial
Park are welcomed.
