Lloyd Austin Mitchell
(February 17, 1931 – March 28,
2014)
Lloyd was born
in Truro’s east end to parents Allan and Hazel (Higgins)
Mitchell and died suddenly in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre
Cardiac Unit, Truro, on Friday, March
28, 2014. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Anne (Audas);
daughters, Janet (Ken), Long Island, New York; Susan (Steve), Hammonds
Plains; Lorie, Hammonds Plains, and Ruth, Truro; grandchildren, Emily,
Griffin, Mitchell, Matthew, Austin, Sarah and Henry; his brother, Don
(Joyce) Mitchell, Truro, and nieces and nephews. Along with his
parents, Lloyd was predeceased by his sister, Ruth. Lloyd lived most
of his life in Truro and enjoyed his summers at their cottage at Brule
Shore. He started every day with a walk and a fresh perspective for a
new day. Lloyd was a real family man and loved all his girls dearly.
He started his employment at Cockshutt Equipment in Truro and later
trained as an insurance adjustor, obtaining his AIIC. He worked with
Major Adjustment Bureau, then with Marsh Adjustment Bureau in Truro
for the remainder of his career. He was a fireman for 17 years with
the Truro Fire Brigade as well as a member of Truro Curling Club
"winning the 1971 Nova Scotia Curling Championship on the Truro
Firefighters Team" and the Truro Golf Club, Truro Duplicate
Bridge Club "achieving a Life Master Designation", and
senior dance group. He played competitive hockey and baseball in his
younger years and continued to enjoy senior skating until his last
days. He served on the board for the VON for several years as well as
on the board of the Butler Centre. Lloyd was a member of Brunswick
Street United Church and served on Session, Trustees, and the
Committee of Stewards as well as a member of the choir.
Arrangements
have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55
Young Street, Truro, where the Truro Fire Brigade will conduct a
Firefighter's Tribute Service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, followed
by visitation from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. Funeral service will be held 2
p.m., Thursday, April 3, at Brunswick Street United Church, 250
Brunswick Street, Truro, Reverend John Parsons and Reverend Boyd
Vincent officiating with a reception to follow in the church basement.
Interment at a later date in the Watson Cemetery, Truro.
