Margaret Pauline (Blaikie, Grant)
McCulloch – 91, Truro, passed away peacefully, with
family at her side, on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Colchester East
Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born May 18, 1922, in Selma, she was a
daughter of the late Paul and Wilema (Chisholm)
Blaikie.
Pauline is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Irwin) Fraser,
Milford Station; Janet (Brian) Grant, Toronto; Philip (Nan) Grant,
formerly of Milford Station and now Valley; grandchildren, Jesse
(Alison) Fraser, Calgary; Luke (Sarah) Fraser, Montreal; Kolby and
Connor Grant; sisters, Dorothy Peach, Halifax; Alvena Inkpen,
Kingston. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her loving
husband of 39 years, Carl Spenser Grant; second husband, Garth
McCulloch; sister, Muriel Maxwell; half-brother, Willie Urquhart. Mom
and her family moved to Middle Musquodoboit when Mom was four years
old. She received her education in Musquodoboit.
After graduation, she clerked at the local store and met the
love of her life, Carl, at a dance. One year later they were married
and moved to Milford Station where Carl operated his Dad’s
farm. Mom became a member of Milford United Church, where she was an
active member of UCW and church choir. She was instrumental in
organizing Milford Home and School Association. Mom served with East
Hants Health Authority Board for a term in 1982. She was a member of
Elmsdale Chapter OES # 55; in her 50 plus years as a member, she
served three terms as Worthy Matron, served as District Deputy Grand
Matron in 1972, held many other offices, became a charter and life
member in 2001 and received her 50 year jewel in 2006. She was also an
affiliate member of Myrtle Chapter OES, Truro, where she served as
organist.
Mom loved music – singing, dancing and playing the
piano and organ, and in earlier years, loved tennis and skating. Mom
earned her driver’s license at the age of 15, as the
examiner had seen her driving, and she drove right up until her
passing. She was a competent driver who was admired for her
"backing up" abilities. Mom moved to Debert in 1983 and
enjoyed her membership with Faith Baptist Church in Great Village,
meeting a new circle of friends and becoming active in the music
program. She was a very accomplished seamstress and she gloated about
her ability to never have to use a calculator for math. The family
would like to extend a special thank you to the VON and the many
people who called and dropped treats off to Mom. She loved the
surprises.
