Reverend Richard F. Humby – 97, Truro,
passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at Colchester East Hants
Health Centre, Truro. Born January 24, 1917, in Summerville, a fishing
village in Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ellen
(Fry) Humby.
For several years, he followed the trade of his ancestors who
were known as Labrador fishermen, sailing a fishing schooner to
Labrador. His thoughts turned to ministry and eventually he attended
Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and Pine Hill Divinity
School in Halifax. Graduating in 1950, he was ordained by the
Newfoundland Conference of the United Church of Canada, and served
churches in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia until his retirement in 1984.
Retiring in the Truro area, he became Minister of Visitation at First
United Church, a position he held for eight years, and was then
honoured with the title of Minister Emeritus of the
congregation.
He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Dunbar); brothers,
Eli, John, Albert. He is survived by his children, Sidney, Hubbards;
Nancy Humby, Hemford, Lunenburg County; Karen (Rick) Logan, New
Glasgow; grandson, Mitchell Wentzell, Bridgewater; sister, Evelyn
Parsons, Newfoundland; brother, Clem, Newfoundland; many nieces and
nephews.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Richard’s
family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, October 2, 2014.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014, at First
United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend Valerie Kingsbury
officiating. Reception will follow in Memorial Hall. Interment in
Bible Hill Cemetery, Warren Drive, Bible Hill. Family flowers only. If
so desired, donations in Richard’s memory to Colchester East
Hants Health Centre Foundation or First United Church (Local Fund or
