Alcon Roy Henderson -
88, Truro, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on
Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
Truro. Born May 19, 1926, in Truro, he was a son of the late Charles
and Margaret (Upham) Henderson.
He is survived by his children, David, Halifax; Karen (Joe
Moore), Halifax; Lynn Knight (Alden), Valley; Stephen (Irene McNutt),
East Mountain; Janice (Ian Sinclair), Valley. He is also survived by
his sister, Eileen Caudle (Ron); brothers, David (Judy) and Fred
(Lorraine); "Buppa" to grandchildren, Jeffery Knight
(Rosie), Martha Thusi (Sbusiso), Chad Henderson, Lauren Sinclair,
Christine Moore, Rachel Sinclair and several nieces and nephews.
Thanks to special friend, Georgina Delaney, for her companionship and
care. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Thelma
(Ramsay); son, Donald.
Roy served in the Second World War as a member of the Royal
Canadian Navy and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26,
Truro. He was a past member of Truro Fire Brigade and Truro Curling
Club, and was a member of Saint Andrew’s United Church. He
was a long-time supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party and
the Conservative Party of Canada. Roy was a career life insurance
agent with Metropolitan Life. He enjoyed travel and spending time with
family and friends. The family would like to extend its gratitude to
the nurses of Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health
Centre, Dr. Frank Slipp, Dr. Cortney Smith and Reverend Jay
Ettinger.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Roy’s
family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Friday, November 28, 2014,
with Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro, conducting a Legion
Tribute Service at 7 p.m., Friday. Funeral service will be held 1
p.m., Saturday, November 29, 2014, at Saint Andrew’s United
Church, 55 King Street, Truro, Reverend Jay Ettinger officiating.
Reception will follow in the church parlour. Interment in Robie Street
Cemetery, 125 Robie Street, Truro. Family flowers only. As an
expression of sympathy, donations in Roy’s memory to Saint
Andrew's United Church or Colchester East Hants Hospice Society are
