Lane, Clifford Maxwell, 93, passed away at his home in Portaupique on December 24, 2014, following a lengthy illness. Born in Londonderry Station on June 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Bertram and Alberta (Toole) Lane. He is survived by his loving wife Emily (Roberts); step-daughters, Barbara (Darrell) Works and Rosemary Swanson; sisters, Georgie (Myles) Rushton and Beulah (the late Rex) Trask; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace (Hayman) Lane; stepson, Kim Swanson; sisters, Marjorie (Rolfe) Hayward, Evelyn and Lillian; brother, Keith (Helen); brothers-in law, Rolfe Hayward and Rex Trask. Cliff was a loving, caring person, devoted to his family. He was a veteran of World War 11, and then served his church and community. He enjoyed watching and playing sports, and reminisced about playing baseball with the Londonderry Iron Clads. He enjoyed fishing, Hartt Lake, travel and reading, but most of all he enjoyed people. During his lengthy retirement, he enjoyed gardening. In his early years, he was employed at A.J. Wells and Wells and Carter General Stores. He later went on to own the business (which became known as Hayward and Lane) with his brother-in-law and business partner, Rolfe Hayward, for thirty-five years. During this period Cliff also served as Post Master. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro. Funeral service will be held 2 pm Saturday, April 18, 2015, in the Riverside United Church Bass River, with Rev. Florence Antle-Brison officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment at a later date in the Portaupique Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Gardens, Bass River, the Riverside United Church, Bass River, or to the Truro VON.
