David Edward Armstrong – 75, Truro. With great
sadness, we announce the passing of David Edward Armstrong, on
Thursday, February 19, 2015, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
Truro. Born in Truro, he was the son of the late Charlie and Annie
(Hayman) Armstrong.
David is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Tillie;
son, Scott (Tammy); daughters, Anne Armstrong (Kevin Fraser), Sarah
(Glen) Terfry, Martha (Winston) Brown; brother, Charles
"Skip" (Patricia); cousins, Bunny Hayman, Mary Walsh, Jean
Caldwell, Marg Wiechie, Janet Dudones; several special nieces and
nephews. He was the loving grandfather to Matthew, Brooklyn, Thomas,
Alicia, Allie, Jared, Caitlyn and Alicia.
A graduate of Acadia University (’60), he was a
successful businessman, serving as Vice-President and President of the
family business, C.D. Armstrong Insurance Ltd. for 50 years, retiring
in May 2014. He was a well-known and respected member of the
community and served as Chairman of the local YMCA, member of the
Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation and Chair of the CCAA National
Basketball Championship Committee. David was a loyal volunteer for the
Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia and the Conservative
Party of Canada. A gifted athlete, he excelled in basketball
and played for both the Acadia University Varsity Basketball Team
(’57-‘60) and the "legendary"
Thunderbirds. A Truro resident his entire life, David gave back to the
community as a strong supporter of minor sports programs as a coach,
sponsor, organizer and fan.
Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 22,
2015 at First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend
Valerie Kingsbury officiating. A reception will follow in
Memorial Hall. Family flowers only. Arrangements have been entrusted
to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
