Philip Allen Henry
"Phil" Janz –
69, South Maitland, passed away peacefully at home with his loving
family on Friday, July 24, 2015. Born January 29, 1946, at Toronto
Western Hospital, he was the son of the late Jacob H. and Violet A.
(Hesp) Janz.
His parents were studying a Missionary Medical Course as
prospective missionaries to serve in China or Africa, instead, they
took over a directorship of an interdenominational
children’s summer camp near Vancouver, British Columbia.
Phil attended school in Port Moody, British Columbia, and also briefly
attended Simon Fraser University. He was a graduate of B.C. Institute
of Technology in Natural Gas and Petroleum. He worked for Dresser
Industries, Imperial Oil Company in Alberta and Trans Mountain
Pipeline in Vancouver. He and his family then moved to Gabriola Island
near Nanaimo where he worked at carpentry.
In 1981, he and the family moved to Wentworth where he kept
honey bees and made maple syrup as well. He kept up to 340 colonies of
honey bees during 20 years of beekeeping in Nova Scotia. He was on the
NSBA (Nova Scotia Beekeepers Association) executive council for six
years from 1991-1997, and was on the CHC (Canadian Honey Council) from
1993-1998 and served as vice president from 1995-1998.
Phil is survived by his wife, Heidemarie
"Heide" (Cohoon) Janz; children, Kristin Janz
(Donald Crankshaw), Stephen Janz (Natalija Osina), Lisa Janz (James
Lee); grandchildren, Samuel Janz, Simon Janz, Joshua Janz, Sophia Lee,
Vivianne Lee.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service
will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015, Pastor Eric MacKinnon
officiating. Reception will follow. Family flowers only. If so
desired, donations in Phil’s memory to Canadian Cancer
Society’s The Lodge That Gives are welcomed. Private
