Totten, Ruby Mae - Truro. It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of our mother on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born in New Annan, she was a daughter of the late William and Mary Bell (Oliver) Carruthers.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Earl; brothers Lewis, Burns, Keith, Warren, John Murray; sisters Doris and Ivy.

She is survived by her son Vernon (Lynn) of Ottawa, ON; daughters Judy (Fred) Terrio of Halifax and Susan Totten of Stellarton; grandchildren Tobi, Michael, Jodie, David, Jeffery, Jane; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters Marguerite, Grace and Catherine.

Together with dad, mom instilled in her children the importance of faith, family, health, hard work, education, respect, pride, resourcefulness, creativity, and a sense of humor.

Our mother was a dedicated, selfless homemaker who provided the day to day stability to our household. Her resourcefulness demonstrated itself in her homemaking skills. She was ahead of her time in proper nutrition and lifestyle which set a good example for her family. She loved walking, curling, and her summers at the cottage on the north shore.  She did beautiful needlework and was an accomplished watercolour artist. Mom was a longstanding member of First United Church, Truro and the U.C.W. She volunteered with the Hospital Auxiliary. Our mother was a natural born caregiver. Her kindness and giving to others never stopped right up to and including her time at Glen Haven Manor.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. No visitation by family request. A private family service will take place in First United Church with Reverend Roger Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Family flowers only. Donations in Ruby’s memory may be made to First United Church Building Fund or to a charity of choice. The family wishes to thank Glen Haven Manor staff for the excellent care given to mom during her stay.  On-line condolences may be sent to the family by viewing Ruby’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
