Gordon Keith
Benjamin – 71, Truro,
passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, on Tuesday,
August 4, 2015, in the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants
Health Centre, Truro. Born July 3, 1944, in Truro, he was a son of the
late Frank and Irene (Creelman) Benjamin.
Gordon worked for Maritime Tel and Tel in Network Services
for 32 years. He was a member of First United Church, where he had
served as an elder, and was a member of Group Committee for
2nd Truro Scouts. He was also a Past Master of
Fellowship #112 Masonic Lodge. In retirement, Gordon joined the senior
men’s curling league where he enjoyed the fun and
camaraderie. He belonged to Cobequid Eco-Trails Society and loved
working on trail building in Colchester County. Gordon had a great
sense of humour and always had a twinkle in his eye. He loved the
outdoors, whether he was cutting firewood at the woodlot, daily walks
in Victoria Park, exploring new trails on the ATV, skiing, boating on
the Bras d’Or or just puttering around the yard. Most of
all, Gordon was a family man. He and Lois loved spending time at their
cottage in Boularderie Centre, Cape Breton, where family gatherings
were so important. His eyes would light up whenever his grandchildren
visited and he was so happy to see them enjoy everything the cottage
had to offer; they couldn’t wait to ride on the tractor with
Papa.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Lois (Crompton);
daughter, Kelly (James) Bonnell, and their son, Ben, Truro; son,
Jeffrey (Nicky) Benjamin, and their children, Kelsey, Katherine and
Jonathan, Veazie, Maine; sister, Joy (Darryl) Wilson, and their
daughters Lara and Erin, Sydney River; sister-in-law, Lynda Benjamin,
and her daughter, Cheryl, Hilden; aunt, Shirley Castle, Stewiacke;
many cousins. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his
brother, David. The family would like to especially thank Drs. Murray,
Smith and Henderson and their entire team for the exceptional care
that Gordon received over the last two years.
Fellowship #112 Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic Service
7 p.m., Thursday, August 6, 2015, at First United Church, 711 Prince
Street, Truro, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday,
August 7, 2015, Reverend Roger Moore officiating. Reception will
follow in Memorial Hall. Gordon lived with prostate cancer since 2009,
so in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Prostate Cancer
Canada or Ida Webster Memorial Fund (First United Church) are
gratefully appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall
– Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private
