John Temple Lewis "Jack"
Piers – 87, Truro,
passed away peacefully, with family at his side, on Wednesday,
September 9, 2020, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born
in Moncton, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late John and Ada
(Davison) Piers. Jack began his career at the Royal Bank in
Newfoundland, spent the majority of his time working in the offices
with Eastern Transport in Truro and retired from Burchell MacDougall
and Grouchy as an office manager.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic
Church, Truro, where he was a 4th Degree member
of the Knights of Columbus and had served as Grand Knight, Past Grand
Knight and District Deputy. Community minded, he was awarded Truro
Citizen of the Year award in 1977, and was Past President of Truro
Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Truro Tennis Club and
Arthritis Society. Anyone who knew Jack knew that his passions were
bowling and tennis. Jack was a member of many championship bowling
teams and participated in local leagues his whole life, even meeting
his future wife Romaine at the lanes. Jack was also an avid
tennis player and was made an honorary lifetime member of the Truro
Tennis Club where he ran the NSTA tournaments and club championships
for years. Woe the players who showed up late for their assigned match
times : )
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Romaine
(Feeley); children, John (Peggy) Piers, Lower Sackville; Christopher
(Janet) Piers, Upper Kingsclear, New Brunswick; Mary Piers (Darren
Bakker), Truro; Theresa (Jeff) MacKinnon, Truro; grandchildren,
Cheyenne, James, Connor, Aliqa, Jillian, Emily, Delia, Natalie, Jack;
great grandson, Ryder; brothers, Robert (Carol) Piers, Truro; David
(Pauline) Piers, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Along with his
parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dora Hunt.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Cortney Smith, Dr. Beth
Llewellyn and the nurses and staff on the Palliative Care Unit at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jack’s
family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 14,
2020. (Please use the front doors of the funeral home,
wear face masks and practice physical
distancing.)
Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 15,
2020, at Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street,
Truro, Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating.

is a maximum of 80 people permitted to attend the Funeral Mass; please
