Elmer Arthur Crowell – 83, Skinners Cove, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Willow Lodge Home For Special Care, Tatamagouche. Born in Bible Hill he was a son of the late Arthur and Lillian (Hodge) Crowell.
He is survived by his brothers, David, Jimmy, Wade and sister, Donna. He was predeceased by eldest brother, Bill. He married Ardith McLean and had two children, Norman Crowell (Margie MacDonald) and Debbie (Harry) Sullivan; grandchildren, Chris Crowell, Paul Stewart, Thomas Crowell, Laura (Stewart) Verney, Sarah Crowell.
Elmer had tried his hand at many trades and started out working at his father’s business at the Sterling Market in Truro. He had worked at MacPhee’s Meat Market for a time before leaving to begin a long career in construction. He worked on the construction of the MacKay Bridge in Halifax for a stint and then started into the home construction business, working with Elmer and Saint McNutt building homes until he started his own home contracting business.
He was a volunteer firefighter with Bible Hill Fire Brigade for many years and then also tried his hand at selling cars for a couple of years with salesman, Andy Elliot. Later, Better Water Industries opened a business in Lower Truro and hired him to do softener installations. He enjoyed this for several years as he was on his own much of the time, which he enjoyed. Elmer was not one for being micro-managed.
In his later years, he enjoyed spending winters in Florida where he purchased a home. He enjoyed going to flea markets there and haggling with vendors. He spent his final years in his home in Skinners Cove, near River John. A special annual treat was the multiple feeds of lobsters he got from the local fisherman whom he had befriended. Elmer will be missed by family and friends.
Interment will be held at a later date. If so desired, donations in Elmer’s memory to a charity of choice are welcomed.
