M. Joan (MacKeigan) Skidmore – 81, Truro, formerly of Springhill, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on her birthday, Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late William and Mabel (MacDougall) MacKeigan.

In Joan’s early years, she enjoyed curling, dancing, and hunting. She was an important figure in the Springhill Skating Club where she served as president for several years and taught small kids how to skate. She also enjoyed snowmobiling and going to the camp. She was an avid reader and enjoyed baking and cooking. Joan lived in Springhill from 1969 to 2007 and worked at the Springhill Recreation Department from 1986 until her retirement in 2000. In 2007, she moved to Truro.

Joan is survived by her son, Jim Skidmore (Adel Gilbert), Two Islands; daughter, Corinne (Peter) Bakes, Salmon River; loving grandchildren, Amanda Skidmore (Luc Sirois), Cory Skidmore (Dominique Gordon), Joshua Reid (Jordan Forsythe), Miranda Reid, Marie Baird, Christie Bakes (John Galway), Traci Bakes (Brendan Ambrose); great-grandchildren, Logan, Levi, Layton, Chase, Ryder, Cas, Gunner, Jezebella, Asher, Everett, Liam, Matthew, and Sophie; sisters, Willena Smolenaar, Ontario; Pat (Lawrence) Taylor, New Brunswick; Nadine (John) Hatcher, Ontario; brother, Frank MacKeigan (Shauna), Sydney Mines; sister-in-law, Carol (Allen) Wilson, Dartmouth.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Garnet Keith Skidmore; sister, Elaine (Raymond) Ferneyhough; brother, Thane; sister, Corinne; brother-in-law, Joe Smolenaar.

Interment will be held at a later date in New Canaan Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Joan’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Colchester SPCA or any public library are welcomed.
