The passing occurred on Saturday, February 18, 2023 of Ruthven Smith Stewart, 96, of Elk Court, formerly of  Old Barns. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Roger and Violet (Ripley) Stewart of Old Barns.

Ruthven was a retired Fisheries Officer with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans retiring in 1987. He worked in many areas including Pictou, Wallace, Blackville, NB, and Truro. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to his camp until his health began to fail.

Ruthven is survived by his sons, Terry (Sandra), Fredericton, NB, Michael (Susan), Tatamagouche, and Danny (Cindy), Blackville, NB; grandchildren, Jake (Shannon) and Joel (Paula), Blackville, NB, Timothy (Jordan), Bedford, Diane (Tim), Kenora, ON, Martin (Monique), Keswick Ridge, NB; eleven great grandchildren; sisters, Mary (Stordy), Moncton, NB, Elizabeth (Dunphy), Halifax, and Ann (Smith), Truro.

Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, the former Joyce Corbett (2019); sister, Margaret (Grant); brothers, Lawrence, Russell and Ervin; niece, Cheryl Dunphy; nephew, Barry Smith.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. As requested there will be no visitation or funeral. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Old Barns Cemetery. If so desired, donations to Old Barns Cemetery or a charity of choice are welcomed.
