It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Deborah Anne Weir, of Truro.  She was a wonderful sister, friend, and mentor to countless people.  She had an undying love of children and took great pride in helping them achieve their best while understanding the needs of others.  No small feat when dealing with kids!  Her interest in kids was something she grew up with as she doted on her brother who was 8 years her junior, even when he was not very cooperative.  She often told of how, when she was asked by "the nuns" if she would like an adopted brother she replied that she would prefer a sister.  Thanks for not sticking to that!

She was introduced to the Baha’i family when in her early twenties and she was a devout follower of the faith for the rest of her life.

She loved horses and thoroughly enjoyed riding Smokey or Perky, whom she shared with Pam.  As the years progressed and her ability to ride lessened, she still enjoyed it vicariously through her "little sister".  Pam did not let anyone push Deb around in school and Deb told, that when being bothered by someone, all she had to do was ask them "…if they knew who my sister was…".  That stopped everything and Deb enjoyed the rest of her time in school. Deb and Pam were inseparable and when Deb became sick with cancer Pam put her nursing skills to work for nearly ten years to see her through it.  She was devastated when Pam became sick with the same disease and succumbed within a month.

As a nanny, she was skilled, respected and in great demand.  She worked in the United States for people on the east coast, which gave her the opportunity to enjoy New York City every weekend.  Her favorite movie star was Yul Brynner, in the movie "The King and I".  When she heard that he would be reprising his role on Broadway, she headed for the theater to purchase a ticket.  When she turned to leave, she found herself face-to-face with her idol.  She said that they had a pleasant few moments chatting together and he thanked her for coming to the show and hoped she would enjoy it.  I think she enjoyed meeting him, more than the show.

One of her favorite stories of her many charges was of a little girl whom all regarded as adorable.  The little one started introducing herself by name and adding "…I’m a doorbell…"  Deb thought that was hilarious.  She was always quick to laugh.  She enjoyed the company of others and could carry on a conversation on most any topic.  She was a voracious reader and enjoyed real books, not just e-readers.

She will be missed by all who knew her, and the days will be just a bit dimmer with her light now out.  She is once again riding with Pam on Smokey or Perky through fields of tall sweet grass with the sun at their backs.

Interment has been held in Cambridge Baptist Church Cemetery. Is so desired, donations to a charity of choice are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.  To paraphrase one of the Baha’i quotes she loved,

"She came from God and has returned unto Him".

Safe journey big sister.
