Eleanor Mae
Powell – 82,
Greenfield, NS, passed away peacefully, surrounded
by the love of her family, on Monday evening, August 28, 2023, at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Aquaforte,
Newfoundland and Labrador, she was a daughter of the late
George and Mary (Morris) Croft.
Eleanor lived in Cape Broyle until her children were
teenagers and then moved to Goose Bay where she taught hairdressing
and eventually became the Principal of the Goose Bay Campus of the
College of the North Atlantic. She also taught in Seal Cove and Grand
Falls to name a few. She spent a number of years in Windsor, Ontario,
where she was in charge of St. John’s Ambulance
programs.
She enjoyed wintering in Florida, walking her dogs, running,
volleyball and a good game of cards with a drink of whiskey. Above
all, she was a true family woman who loved her family and friends
dearly; she loved to laugh and entertain, and her abilities around the
kitchen will be missed, especially her cod au gratin.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, John, a.k.a. Sandy;
children, Myles Hayden, Airdrie, Alberta; Wanda (Ian) Boocock,
Shubenacadie East; Katrina (Mike) Ingram, Richmond, UK;
Louise (Mike) McCarthy, Ottawa, Ontario; grandchildren, Shannon
(Mike), David (Chelsea), Karl (Alannah), Devon, Ethan, Charlotte,
Megan; great grandchildren, Remi, Bria, Jonny, Josie; sister, Esther
(Richard) Barrett, St. John’s, Newfoundland; and many other
nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters,
Jean (David) Payne, Madonna (Mick) Dalton; brother, George (Marg)
Croft.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday,
September 9, 2023 in Cape Broyle Church, Newfoundland, followed by
interment in the Aquaforte Cemetery, with a reception to follow. If so
desired, in lieu of flowers, donations in
Eleanor’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society are
welcomed.
