At the age of 83,
Frederick "Fred" Bernard Lang peacefully passed away on
Monday, September 4, 2023 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
in Truro, Nova Scotia. Born in Halifax on August 9, 1940, Fred Lang
was the son of Eddie and Rita Lang. He was the older brother to Sandra
"Cookie" Kline and Frank Lang (passed away
2008).
At the age of 17, Fred
left Halifax for boot camp and entered the military. Through training
and hard work Fred became an aircraft engine mechanic. A devoted
husband, Fred met his future wife, Grace Latullippe when he was
stationed in Ottawa as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Fred and Grace were married in November of 1964, the next day they
headed off for a four year tour of Belgium, France and
Germany.
Fred's oldest son,
James "Jim" Edward Lang was born in Verdun, France in
October of 1965. After being transferred to CFB Trenton, Ontario,
Fred's daughter, Kimberly "Kim" Anne Lang was born in
January of 1971.
In the summer of 1978,
Fred and the family piled into their Ford LTD and drove to Burbank,
California for his latest posting. In December of 1979, Fred was
heading home and he was posted to CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia. In
September of 1982, Fred and the family moved to CFB Borden, Ontario.
Fred's final posting in the RCAF took place in the summer of 1988 when
he was stationed to CFB Downsview, Ontario.
Finally, after an
impressive 33-year career, Fred retired from the military as a Master
Warrant Officer in August of 1990. Fred and Grace lived for a few
years in Newmarket, Ontario. From there, they settled in St.
Catharines, Ontario as Grace was stationed for her executive job the
Ministry of Transportation in Ontario.
In April of 2000, Jim
married Patricia and they had two lovely daughters, Adriana and
Cassandra. In November of 2008, Kim married the pride of Truro, Steve
Shaw. A few years later, their special daughter, Sophie was born. Fred
now had his beloved wife, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and three
granddaughters.
Fred’s last
posting with ‘Amazing’ Grace was at Parkland in
Truro, Nova Scotia. After many years, Fred had finally come home to
his beloved Nova Scotia.
Fred Lang loved his
family above all else. He was a loyal and loving husband. He loved his
kids and his grandkids. He loved his country and the RCAF. He loved
the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. Fred Lang loved his wife, Grace; he
loved his family and friends. While he will be missed, his memory and
legacy of kindness will live on for years to come.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young
Street, Truro, where the family will receive friends from 4-6 pm
Thursday, September 7, and where a celebration of Fred’s
life will be held 10 am Friday, September 8, 2023. A private family
burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Fred’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed.
