Cyril Gordon Thurber – 80, Stewiacke. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cyril Gordon Thurber on Sunday, September 24, 2023, in Truro. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Cecil and Greta (Welch) Thurber.

Gordon joined the Canadian Forces at the age of 16, serving as a widely respected Medic with the Navy and Army. His military career took him to many interesting places; from sailing on a RCN frigate in Europe, serving on a submarine, to a posting at the Alert base on Ellesmere Island in Canada's North.

Gordon married Elizebeth Ann Ellis on February 14, 1969. They lived on various CF bases across Canada and had three children, Cecil (Gail), Dartmouth; Jane, Verona, Ontario; Harold (Mary), South Indian Lake, Manitoba.

Gordon retired as a Master Warrant Officer after 37 years of dedicated service. He received a Certificate of Service from the Chief of Defence Staff in 1996. During his retirement, Gordon lived with his wife in Stewiacke, where he enjoyed repairing old furniture, watching Blue Jays baseball and working in his garage.

Gordon adored his wife, children and grandchildren, Alexis, Alex, Colton, Benjamin, Marcella, T.J., Amina and great grandchildren, Arlen and Cayden. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Linden and sister-in-law, Greta Ann. He is survived by his sister, Avis (Hugh) Faulkner and brother, Arden (Sandy).

Dad is now at peace and his kindness and sense of humour will never be forgotten by his family and those who loved him. The family wishes to thank the home care team at the Victorian Order of Nurses, staff at Halifax Infirmary, QEII and staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. A family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Gordon's memory can be made to the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
