Merle Reginald Smith – 90, Harmony/Bible Hill. We are sad to announce that Merle Reginald Smith died peacefully at his home at Shannex Vimy Court, Bible Hill, on Monday evening, December 4, 2023. He was born to the late Cecil and Audrey Smith of Harmony.

Merle was a gifted mechanic and jack of all trades. He began his career as a teenager working as a groundskeeper and chauffeur, then as cab driver, burner serviceman, tending meteorological gauges, plumber, tractor trailer fabricator, and ended his career as maintenance with Andrés Wines and for a local property developer.

A bit of a visionary, he had the foresight to purchase waterfront property at Fox Harbour when the going price was only a few hundred dollars. It quickly became a gathering place for friends and family these past 55 years, and it was there that he spent many happy summers. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro and the Main Brace. He loved hunting and fishing and was a founding member of the local chapter of National Campers and Hikers Association.

Merle is survived by his sister, Leona Smith (Craig) Barnes, Valley; sister-in-law, Agnes Smith, Harmony; children, Wanda Davies, Trenton; Stephen (Carolynne), Brookfield; Arlene Smith (John) Lowe, Londonderry; Penny Ferguson, Bible Hill; Cindie Smith (Michael Fleming), Greenfield; Tony (Debbie) Smith, Lornevale; Tara (Dan) Kaulkman, Port Williams; Sharon Magnuson, Edmonton, Alberat; stepchildren, Jim (Jeannette) Kennedy, Mushaboom; Karen Kennedy, Truro; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his beach family at Fox Harbour. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Bill Smith; son-in-law, Paul Ferguson.

His family would like to extend deep thanks to the quiet heroes in our community - the staff of Shannex Vimy Court, who provided him with excellent care and a loving environment during his last years.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. At Dad’s request, his remains have been cremated and a private family celebration of life will be held on a later date at Fox Harbour. If so desired, donations in Merle’s memory to Harmony Cemetery are welcomed. Public messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Merle’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
