It is with deep sorrow that we bid farewell to Joan (Barron) Main, who peacefully passed away on May 23, 2024 at Cedarstone Enhanced Care, at the age of 89.

Joan was a devoted wife to Lionel for over 60 years. She was a loving mother to her children and their spouses and she adored all her grandchildren. Joan’s family was everything to her and she was a dedicated daughter and sibling throughout her life.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Janet (John) Budreski, Whistler, British Columbia and son Jeffrey (Kristen) Main, Airdrie, Alberta. She was a proud grandmother to Andrew (Marli) Budreski, Mitchell Budreski, River Main, Noah Main, Chris Rutherford and Logan Rutherford and also great grandson, Cormac Budreski. She will be fondly remembered by her brothers, Blaine, Brian and Darrell (Carla) Barron, brothers-in-law, Ted Curry and Ronald Main, sister-in-law, Myrna Morash and their families.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Lionel Main; her parents, Roland and Minnie (Ward) Barron; Lionel’s parents, Alworth and Hildred (Miller) Main; sister, Claire Curry; brother-in-law, Malcolm Morash; sisters-in-law, Eileen Main and Dana Barron; niece, Lisa Barron and grandnephew, Adam Curry.

This feisty girl from Hants County was quite an athlete in her younger days, including playing first base for the girls’ softball team where she was known as the Terror of Kennetcook.

She was also an excellent student, traveling by train to Windsor each day to finish her grade school education and subsequently graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1953. She taught for many years in Kennetcook, several schools in Bible Hill and the Vocational School in Springhill.

Joan was a dedicated resident of Truro and Bible Hill for over 60 years. Besides her teaching career she proudly volunteered in many capacities at St David’s United Church. She sang in the Church choir, sat on the Board of Stewards, was an active UCW member and taught CGIT. She was also actively involved in Boy Scouts of Canada and several other groups in the community. Joan was even known to write and present sermons at St. David’s United Church in her later years.

Joan’s warmth endeared her to all who crossed her path. She will always be remembered for her tremendous generosity to family, friends and community. She was very often the organizer of parties and family reunions. Many of these activities were accompanied by a humorous and personalized song or poem that she had written. She had a zest for life that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know her.

A special thank you is extended to our family and friends and the staff at Cedarstone Enhanced Care for their support during her battle with Alzheimer’s.

A celebration of life will be held 11 am Monday, July 29, 2024, at Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, Reverend April Hart officiating. Following the reception, interment will be in Bible Hill Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Arthritis Society Canada or a charity of choice. Tributes, words of comfort and memories may be shared at:
