Richard Chisholm "Mike" Nowlan - 91, Truro, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born in Wolfville and he was the youngest of five children born to the late Honourable George Clyde Nowlan and Miriam Grace (Chisholm) Nowlan. He was predeceased by two infant children; brothers, George, Charles, Pat; dear sister, Clara.
He attended Acadia University where he studied Economics and graduated in 1955. Mike worked for Royal Bank of Canada his entire career where he met his wife, Shirley Emmett on their first day of work at the bank in Truro. They were married a year later. He retired from the bank in 1990 and moved to Highland Village where wonderful family gatherings were held year after year.
Mike was involved over the years volunteering his time at the curling club, the Anglican Church, and serving on committees. He loved curling and was actively involved at Truro Curling Club until 2020. He coached many young players and played in many clubs well into his 80s.
He was a devoted and loving father to his five children and their families. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Shirley (Emmett) Nowlan; children, Rick Nowlan (Lori) Springhill; Sandra Johnston (Robert), Marion Bridge; Robert Nowlan (Doris), Pugwash; Barbara Hondas (Jim), Miramichi, New Brunswick; Elizabeth Nowlan (Dan Steeves), Havelock, New Brunswick. He was the proud Grampy to 11 grandchildren, Melanie Graef (Kevin), Jessica Nowlan (Spencer Gough), Kristie Hartley (Tom), Tyler Glenen (Lauren), Samantha Nowlan (Gordon Shupe), Michael Nowlan, Bradley Johnston (Ali), Katlin Glenen (Austin Quinn), Olivia Hondas (Dilan Monge), Casey Glenen (Mina Teague), Timothy Hondas; 14 great grandchildren, Hailey, Gus, Brianna, Elliot, Amelia N-G, Isabelle, Leo, Beckett, Parker, Amelia J, Rory, Nellie, Everly and Neil.
He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Mike’s family would like to express their gratitude to the collective health care workers at Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their kindness, compassion and guidance.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at St. John's Anglican Church, 25 Church Street, Truro, The Rt. Reverend David Torraville officiating. (Please use the link door between the church and hall to access the church.) Reception will follow in Kaulbach Hall. A private committal service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mike’s memory can be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission if desired.
