It is with both great
sadness and deep gratitude for a well-lived life that we announce the
passing of our beloved mother, Leonora Elizabeth
"Bette" Loeffler. Residing
in Economy, Nova Scotia, Bette passed peacefully on Sunday,
August 3, 2025, at her home surrounded by family,
with love and so many memories.
Born in 1930, in Five
Islands, Nova Scotia, to the late Wilfred and Helene Corbett, she was
the second of four children. Bette is survived by children,
Debbie (Ron) Welton, Michelle (Ace) Powel, Rudi (Gudi)
Loeffler; three grand-children; two step grand-children; 12 great
grand-children; three great-great grand-children; many nieces, nephews
and cousins; siblings, Bea (Purdy) Crawford, Steven (Linda)
Corbett; and was predeceased by her husband, Rudi and brother, Doug
Corbett.
In her early years,
Bette lived in Bass River where she spent most of her school years,
then later graduated from Normal College in Truro, Nova
Scotia. Her teaching career took her to Perron, Quebec where she met
her husband, Rudi of 65 years.
The couple moved to
Ontario in 1952, then on to Manitoba, and Saskatchewan where
her husband’s construction career took them. While
Rudi’s work took him away during the week, Bette raised
their three children and cared for many other children while their
parents worked.
In 1967 they moved
"home" to Nova Scotia where they purchased a farm which they
operated until 1983. In 1969, Bette taught Home Economics at
the Bass River School. Together they opened a meat shop
selling products made from beef raised on their farm.
Bette supplied the home baking for the shop and was famous
for her pies.
After Rudi and Bette
started Kenomee Log Homes in1982, Bette drew up cutting lists for
the homes, designed kitchens, managed the accounting, and
other administrative tasks. Bette loved to travel and enjoyed trips to
Germany, Florida, Texas, Costa Rica plus others. They greatly
enjoyed a trip across Canada and to Alaska with Rudi’s
brother and wife from Germany.
Bette was a wonderful
seamstress and enjoyed trying her hand at different crafts. She
enjoyed charcoal drawing, ceramics, knitting socks and
mittens for her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In later
years, she especially enjoyed making cards for family and friends and
spent many hours puzzling. Bette was very sharp witted and
had a wonderful sense of humor and loved knowing what all her children
were up to.
Many thanks to all the
doctors and nurses, and VON for all the care they provided. Thank you
to Linda York for all your care and support. A very special
thank-you to Susan Fraser for her care, dedication, and warm
support and going above and beyond for Bette and
family.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro
where a funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, August 23, 2025,
with Rev. Glen Rupchan officiating. Reception will follow in the
funeral home for all. A private family interment at Penial United
Church Cemetery in Five Islands will immediately follow the
service and reception. Family flowers only. If so
desired, donations in Bette’s memory to Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Nova Scotia are
welcomed.
