Frederick Gordon "Fred" Weatherbee - 90, Truro Heights, passed away peacefully early in the afternoon on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in the Palliative Care Unit of Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in McClures Mills, Colchester County, he was the son of the late Ryland and Alda Maude (Connolly) Weatherbee.

Fred is survived by his wife of 65 years, Yvonne (Murray); children, Terrance (Marion), Sonya, Andrew (Cheryl); grandsons, Riley, Corwin, Finn; sisters, Pansy Anne Baker, Karen (Johnny) Pratt, Marena (Paul) Weavers; brother-in-law, Donnie (Marilyn) Mollon; numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his son-in-law, David; sisters, Ramona, Alice, April; brothers, Larry and Hughie.

Fred joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 17. He became a weapons technician, colloquially known as "gun plumbers", and later worked as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician. During his 34-year career, he was ultimately promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Fred served overseas in Italy and twice in Germany. In Canada, he served in Goose Bay, Shearwater, Greenwood, Cornwallis, and other locations. While in Europe, Fred visited many of the Canadian WWII cemeteries and sites, including Vimy Ridge and Flanders Fields.

Fred was involved in the Scouting movement for 36 years, until he was in his 60s. He joined the Legion in Kingston, Nova Scotia, and recently received his 55-year pin. He was also involved in the Truro Legion Pipe and Drum Band. A high point of this was participating in liberation parades in Holland, celebrating the liberation of Holland by Canadian forces. As well, Fred enjoyed other charitable activities including the Legion Poppy Fund Campaign and The Salvation Army Holiday kettle campaigns. In his latter years, Fred greatly enjoyed gardening and tending his plants and trees on his family property in Truro Heights.

A celebration of life will be held in Spring. Arrangements will be announced later. The family would like to thank the staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their professionalism and compassion. We would also like to thank Colchester East Hants Hospice Society. If so desired, donations in Fred’s memory to Colchester East Hants Hospice Society, Truro Heights United Baptist Church or charity of choice are welcomed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Tributes, words of comfort and memories may be shared at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
