Eric Bruce Chapman – 78, Debert. It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Eric Bruce Chapman, of Debert, on Friday, May 29, 2026, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. After a cerebellum stroke on May 4, 2026, he put up a valiant fight to try and regain what mobility he could, but the stroke brought on other issues that his determination could not overcome.
He began his career as a Nuclear Medicine technologist. After two years at the VG hospital in Halifax, he went on to be Chief Technician in Nuclear Medicine at University of Alberta Hospital for six years. There was a certain amount of sadness associated with the job, and he being a creative person, decided to pursue other endeavors. Drawing on his more creative side, he took up drafting working for AT&T and National Drilling in Nisku, Alberta.
The move back to Nova Scotia was made in 1983, where he drafted for Kent Homes, Debert, for a short period of time. This position did not challenge his creative spirit enough, so he set up his own business as Debert Planworks. He was self-employed for the remainder of his career which involved commercial and residential design and planning. He really enjoyed helping clients bring their visions to life. During this whole period, he also designed his own home and built it all from scratch, from the basement to the roof, and everything in between.
In what little spare time he had, he enjoyed carving, painting, relaxing with movies and watching science and nature shows. For the last few years, he enjoyed delving deeper into physics and the field of gravity; sometimes to the point where his children would roll their eyes and change the subject at hand, and his beloved wife would start digging in the pots and pans drawer.
He was Papa to Noah and Lexi and they had him wrapped. He really enjoyed spending time with them and being creative with them. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to have the same experience with Ev and Isaac, as they lived in a different province.
He is survived and dearly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda (Wilson); children, Andrew Chapman, Naples, Florida; Michael Chapman (Michelle Kirby), Deseronto, Ontario; Amy Chapman, Debert; grandchildren, Noah Hadley (Maddy Porter), Debert; Lexi Turner, Halifax; Ev Chapman and Isaac Chapman, Greenwich. He is also survived by his brother, Darrell Chapman, Bible Hill; sisters, Cathy (John) Armstrong, Kingston, Nova Scotia; Pat (Ron) Theberge, Edmonton, Alberta; Joan (Bill) Carlisle, Spruce Grove, Alberta; Wanda, Greenwood.
Honouring his wishes, there will be no service by request. If so desired, donations in Eric’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation are welcomed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Tributes, words of comfort and memories may be shared at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
