Roderick Bertram "Rory" MacNeil – 86,
Salmon River, formerly of Grand Narrows. It is with gratitude for a
life well lived that we announce the passing of Roderick
"Rory" Bertram MacNeil. We are comforted to know that our
dad and our mom are now reunited.
Rory was predeceased by his parents, John Allan and Katie
(MacIsaac) MacNeil; sisters, Helen Davenport and Catherine
"Tunny" MacNeil. He is survived by his siblings, Shirley
Denney, Anita MacLean, Gregory MacIsaac. He will be dearly missed by
his children, Brent MacNeil, Jerelynn MacNeil (Shawn Vokey), Coleen
MacNeil (Martin Ethier), Kate MacNeil (Gasper Barone). He
will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, John Vokey (Sam),
Kaleigh Vokey (Taylor), Shawna Vokey, Maria Ethier, Ethan Ethier,
Antoine Ethier and proud name sake, Vinny (Rory)
Barone.
Being raised in a household that spoke Gaelic and had
constant Scottish music, he was very proud of his Cape Breton roots.
He valued the MacNeil family’s generational connections to
STFX University. His life was filled with family, Scottish music,
hockey, cards and extensive knowledge of Cape Breton history. Despite
this, he only mastered the ‘air fiddle’ and lived
to regret his daughter’s violin recital. He was happiest
around a table filled with family, friends, laughter, and a little
friendly competition. The family would like to thank his weekly card
playing buddies over the last three decades for keeping him active,
entertained and for all of their support in later years. Grandad
shared his love of cards with all of his grandchildren.
He was a proud alumnus of both STFX University and Saint
Mary’s University, having earned four degrees. He was a well
known beloved Vice Principal of Cobequid Educational Centre from 1970
until he retired in 1995. Throughout his career he coached hockey and
football, and he was co-founder of the commercial hockey league in
Brookfield, played in the Truro Bearcats Old Timers league, taught
Driver’s Education, supported school athletics and travelled
with CEC School Band. After retiring, he pursued a career in Real
Estate with Prudential Woods Realty Ltd. and was a long term Chair and
Board Member of VON.
Rory’s life was one of learning, teaching,
storytelling, and bringing people together. He was a devoted family
man and an exceptionally proud grandfather. We will forever cherish
the life lessons, love, unwavering support, history lessons and
meaningful conversations that we were blessed to have with you. We
love you dad.
