Robert Joseph "Bob" Braedley – 74, Truro. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Joseph "Bob" Braedley on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife of 50 years, Marie, and his children, Kenneth (Neala), Charles (Lianne), Michael, and Katherine (James). He leaves behind eight grandchildren whom he adored: Tate, Ella, Joseph, Hannah, Nicolas, Robin, Henry, Allison. He will be fondly remembered by his large extended family.
Born in North Sydney, Cape Breton to Bill and Dot Braedley, Bob was the second of four children, Dave (Mary), Ron (Sue), and Jane (Ron). He spent his formative years growing up in Sydney Mines. Bob excelled in school, and enjoyed participating in Reach for the Top and the debate team in high school. He continued on to Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick to earn a Bachelor's of Science, Honours, in Chemistry. It was there that he met his future wife, Marie (Hill). His passion for cooking helped to win her heart, a skill he continued to practice and hone his whole life, as well as pass on to his children (it's only chemistry, after all).
They were married in September, 1975 on their first day of class on the way to earning a B.Ed. from MtA. Shortly after graduating, he and Marie moved to McAdam, New Brunswick to begin their teaching careers. With a desire to live closer to family, they moved to Truro in 1982. He was a passionate educator and influenced many students and colleagues in his various roles in the education system. After a fulfilling career, he retired as the registrar in the Guidance department of CEC in Truro in 2009.
Ever the teacher, Bob loved to have spirited discussions with friends and family alike. You were sure to explain and defend your position to Bob, or you would be met with an, "I need you to understand that..." If you found yourself in this position, you had already lost the argument. He enjoyed playing bridge with his friends at home, at the local bridge club, and online, receiving his Lifetime Master Certificate from American Contract Bridge League. If you ever wanted to know the stats of your favourite Blue Jays or Patriots players, he was quick to provide his colour commentary as a true sports fan. He also volunteered his time and talents with Nova Scotia Teachers Union, Math Association, minor hockey, and First United Church in Truro.
Bob’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was a devoted son, ensuring that his parents had the best care and his mother-in-law always felt welcome. Bob loved to converse, always leaving people feeling like he was genuinely interested in them. He hosted many family and friend gatherings, ensuring that people left well-fed and uplifted. He routinely expressed pride in his children and grandchildren. He supported them through successes and challenges, offering counsel or a "Bob-ism": "You can do anything you want, just not everything you want." The love he felt for his wife, Marie, was evident to everyone who knew them. They shared many common interests, especially traveling and cruising the world together and with friends. Many special memories were made while spending summers "Out on the Mira." Their partnership was rooted in love, respect, integrity, commitment, and joy.
He and Marie faced his cancer journey with strength and stoicism, and the attitude that, "It is what it is." The family would like to thank Dr. Snow, Dr. Ha, and the oncology team in Halifax, the staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre oncology unit (Dr. Rowe) and the Palliative Care team, VON, as well as the many health professionals who provided excellent care.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Bob’s family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026.
